Design of traffic construction phasing for the Glilot Interchange, intended to enable the widening of the Ayalon Highway and the construction of two new bridges above the existing interchange, while maintaining continuous traffic flow throughout the works.
Because of significant right-of-way constraints, building bypasses was almost impossible, and creative solutions were therefore required that would allow both the casting and construction of the new bridge columns and the underground infrastructure works, without paralysing the interchange.
To this end a central traffic arrangement was devised, based on creating two new temporary alignments: an alternative alignment for the Ayalon ramp from south to east, including special raising and shoring works, and an alternative alignment for Highway 5 from west to east. Under this arrangement most of the project’s construction work was in fact carried out, while the remaining arrangements on Highway 5 and the Ayalon Highway were updated at each stage according to the resulting traffic situation.
The solution reduced the number of construction stages, maintained continuous traffic flow through the interchange throughout the period, and allowed the works to be carried out without material disruption and without harming the interchange’s level of service.
